On December 28, the first nuclear power unit of the Fujian Ningde Nuclear Power Plant, located in the economic zone on the western side of the Taiwan Strait, was successfully connected to the grid. Owned by China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group, this milestone marks a significant step forward in the plant’s development. After thorough checks by engineers, all equipment parameters during the grid connection process were found to be stable and well-controlled, confirming that the unit has entered the commissioning phase and is now capable of generating electricity.
Grid connection is not just a technical achievement—it's a crucial test of the entire nuclear power system, including both primary and secondary circuits. It also marks the start of value creation for the nuclear power company. From this point on, residents in Fujian will begin to benefit from the clean energy produced by Unit 1 of the Ningde plant. However, it's important to note that grid connection is not the same as commercial operation. The unit will now undergo a series of load tests and transient tests, preparing it for full-scale commercial use.
The first phase of the Ningde Nuclear Power Plant is a joint project involving China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group, China Datang Group, and the Fujian Provincial Energy Group. It features China’s own improved pressurized water reactor (PWR) technology, with four units each having a capacity of 1.08 million kilowatts. Once fully operational, the plant is expected to generate around 30 billion kilowatt-hours annually. This will help alleviate energy shortages in southeastern China, improve the energy and grid structure, reduce carbon emissions, and support sustainable economic and social development in Fujian. It also plays a vital role in realizing the vision of a "Beautiful Fujian" with its green and clean environment.
