For furniture covered under warranty, it is reasonable for manufacturers to offer maintenance services. However, when the furniture goes beyond the warranty period, the question arises: how should it be repaired? According to statistics from "Government Procurement Information News," in recent years, there has been a growing trend of separate furniture repair service projects in government procurement, especially for student dormitory furniture. These projects are typically initiated by large universities with significant numbers of students. Once the volume of damaged furniture exceeds a certain threshold, schools tend to organize dedicated repair service tenders.
The person in charge of the Education Procurement Management Office at the Guangdong Education Equipment Center explained that such projects are often organized by institutions with extensive infrastructure needs. In many cases, during the initial procurement process, maintenance services are also included. Most purchasers require a five-year warranty, which can sometimes be extended up to eight years. If furniture within the warranty period is damaged, the original supplier usually handles the repairs. But when the furniture is out of warranty, the decision to organize a separate project depends on the scale of the damage.
At South China Agricultural University, for example, with over 40,000 students, the demand for dormitory furniture is immense. The university’s representative noted that while furniture beyond warranty may show minor damages, it would be wasteful to replace them entirely. By organizing public tenders for repair services, they can save costs and extend the lifespan of their furniture. In 2013, the university held two separate repair projects, with budgets of 480,000 and 490,000 yuan respectively.
However, not all universities follow this approach. At Sun Yat-sen University, due to the smaller number of damaged items, no such projects have been organized yet. A representative from the Tender Management Center mentioned that while organizing separate repair projects is one solution, other options like internal logistics teams or free maintenance offers from suppliers are also viable.
From an aesthetic perspective, repairing damaged furniture with the original supplier is ideal. However, as Dai Wei, a project leader at the Zhejiang Education Technology Center, pointed out, different manufacturers use varying materials and parts, making it difficult to ensure consistency if another company handles the repairs. Despite these concerns, he acknowledged that future consideration of such practices cannot be ruled out.
In practice, many furniture companies close down over time, leaving some products without support even before the warranty expires. This makes re-tendering for maintenance services a practical alternative. Guangzhou Xinye Furniture Co., Ltd. reported that more universities in Guangdong are now bidding for furniture repair services. In 2013, the company successfully won two such contracts, highlighting the growing importance of post-warranty maintenance solutions.
