Scientists from Nagoya University in Japan have discovered a protein kinase called SIPK that controls the immune response of plants.
According to a report by the Japanese media on June 1, scientists from the University of Nagoya, Yoshioka, and others wrote in the latest issue of the American Plant Physiology Society's "Plant Cell," that when pathogens invade plant cells, the plant produces reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen. . With this signal, various immune reactions occur in plants to fight pathogens. Scientists in Europe and America have discovered that the process of controlling the immune response of plants should be a special set of enzymes associated with this process, but the specific enzymes controlling this process have not been determined. To find this enzyme, Yoshioka Bowen et al. conducted a careful study of this particular enzyme assembly.
Scientists first inject pathogens into plant cells and then use genetic techniques to individually inhibit each enzyme in a particular set of enzymes. The results showed that when the protein kinase "SIPK" was inhibited, the production of reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen in the plants slowed down significantly, resulting in a very insignificant immune response in plants. The scientists therefore concluded that "SIPK" is an enzyme that controls the immune response of plants.
On the basis of this discovery, Yoshioka Bowen et al. developed a potato with a very active "SIPK" in the body, and the active "SIPK" greatly enhanced the disease resistance of the potato. Scientists plan to use this result in the future to develop more vegetables that are resistant to disease.
