This circuit is made of a conductive gel with self-healing function, which is highly conductive, flexible and self-healing at room temperature. Yu Guihua, an assistant professor at the University of Texas at Austin, who led the study, said that this property is closely related to its two components: supramolecular gel (supergel) and conductive polymer hydrogel. This combination strategy allows new materials to have both the physical and chemical properties of both materials.
The polymer chemistry of super gels provides self-healing ability for new materials. As a supramolecular assembly material, this gel consists of macromolecular subunits rather than individual molecules. Due to their unique size and structure, the interaction between the supergel molecules is much weaker than that of ordinary materials, and this interaction is reversible, making it capable of re-self-assembly like “dynamic glueâ€. Conductive polymer hydrogels help to improve the electrical conductivity of new materials due to their unique 3D network structure. As a backbone material for the hybrid gel, the hydrogel component also enhances the strength and elasticity of the new material. When the supergel is injected into the hydrogel matrix, the supergel forms a second network structure in the new material, making the two materials look like a whole.
Researchers have shown that when the hybrid gel circuit is cut, it can be self-healing in one minute and return to electrical conduction. Even if it is cut multiple times in the same position, the gel circuit can be "revived with blood".
