Timken bearing repair technology: another cost-effective option for replacing bearings

1. Foreword

The rolling bearing is an important component supported by the rotating shaft or the movable part of most mechanical devices, and is also a supporting member that rotates against the main body by rolling of the rolling elements. Rolling bearings have many outstanding advantages and are widely used in modern industry. However, due to limitations in materials, lubrication, maintenance, etc., rolling bearings have their fatigue life limit. After the bearing is damaged or reaches the end of its life, industrial enterprises mostly adopt the method of replacing the new bearing to restore the normal operation of the equipment.

With the development of market competition and technology, the bearing repair technology itself has the advantage that it can be used as a new bearing again after spending less money in a shorter period of time, and is increasingly favored by the industrial industry. This is undoubtedly a more economical and faster production guarantee than purchasing new bearings.

Timken has been in the bearing repair business for more than 60 years and is widely used in aviation, transportation, cement and building materials, metallurgy, electric power, paper and other industries. Since 2006, Timken's repair center in China has also repaired more than 6,800 sets of bearings for cement, steel, paper and other customers, of which more than 50% are bearings of other imported brands. Experience has shown that the repaired bearing can fully meet the same life cycle requirements of the new bearing. Moreover, bearing repair has outstanding advantages in terms of delivery time and cost reduction compared with new bearing purchases.

2. The necessity of bearing repair

Bearing damage can cause damage to the entire operating system, resulting in additional costs, increased maintenance, and extended downtime. In most traditional industrial applications, bearings are scrapped when they have not reached their full useful life, resulting in increased costs and intangible waste. Bearing repair can extend bearing life and become another economical alternative to purchasing new products.

Bearing repair technology is becoming more and more popular in the domestic and international industrial fields, providing value-added services to customers. Improved bearing design, steel purity, maintenance methods and repair processes have gradually increased their potential advantages.

2.1. Technical feasibility

Initial bearing design considered its use and application conditions to determine the corresponding service life and fatigue life. However, due to improper installation, contaminants, insufficient lubrication or eccentricity, the actual life of the bearing usually does not reach the expected running time (see Figure 1). In fact, less than 10% of bearings in industrial applications have reached the L10 standard (design life).
