Spintronics, which was well-known for winning the 2007 Nobel Prize in Physics, has made progress in 2008 – scientists have realized the manipulation of electron spins in diamonds. A group of scientists from the Netherlands and the United States captured an electron in a vacancy in a diamond sample and detected the spin of a single electron; a team from Harvard University passed the position of a single carbon 11 impurity atom in the diamond through the carbon. The nuclear spin of an atom was successfully limited to a range of 1 nanometer. Su Gang said that the research results will lead to the creation of new electronic circuits.
Su Gang also believes that research on high-temperature superconductors, graphene and its electronic devices, breakthroughs in nano-spintronics, and research on emerging nanomaterials and their devices will remain hot research in 2009.
