The machine tool industry in the first three quarters showed a steady growth trend

Abstract According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, China's machine tool industry generated a total sales revenue of 564.42 billion yuan from January to September 2013, representing a year-on-year increase of 12.7%. The industry also reported a profit of 31.46 billion yuan, up by 8.1% compared to the same period in the previous year. However, the profit margin on product sales dropped slightly to 5.6%, a decrease of 0.2 percentage points from the previous year. Fixed asset investment in the sector grew by 21.1% year-on-year during the first three quarters, showing continued confidence in long-term development. In terms of production, the output of metal cutting machine tools reached 538,939 units, with CNC machine tools accounting for 149,302 units—both declining by 9.4% and 0.4%, respectively, compared to the same period last year. Sales revenue from these products rose by 4.2% to 107.02 billion yuan, but profits fell by 310 million yuan to 3.55 billion yuan, with the sales profit margin dropping to 3.3%, down 0.5 percentage points year-on-year. Meanwhile, the output of metal forming machine tools decreased by 3.3% to 167,287 units, while sales revenue increased by 14.2% to 53.31 billion yuan. Profits rose by 230 million yuan to 3.08 billion yuan, with the sales profit margin at 5.8%, down 0.3 percentage points from the previous year. On the import side, total machine tool imports for the period stood at 12.56 billion U.S. dollars, a decline of 19.3% year-on-year. Imports of metal processing machine tools fell by 24.0% to 7.98 billion U.S. dollars, with gold cutting machine tools down 25.7% to 6.34 billion U.S. dollars, and forming machine tools down 11.6% to 1.10 billion U.S. dollars. Exports of machine tool products totaled 4.46 billion U.S. dollars, a slight decrease of 1.5% year-on-year. However, exports of metal processing machine tools increased by 1.7% to 1.38 billion U.S. dollars. Specifically, gold cutting machine tool exports fell by 4.3% to 880 million U.S. dollars, while forming machine tool exports rose by 14.0% to 500 million U.S. dollars. Since 2012, China's machine tool exports to markets such as the U.S., Vietnam, and Mexico have seen strong growth, but overall export growth has slowed significantly. From April 2013 onward, cumulative exports turned negative, with declines ranging between 0.5% and 1.5% in some months. Among the top 10 export markets in the first three quarters, India saw a 30% drop, Japan a 10% decline, and Germany a 1% fall, while most other regions showed positive growth. The data indicates that, aside from the gold cutting machine tool segment, the overall sales revenue of China’s machine tool industry showed steady growth in the first three quarters of 2013. However, many smaller sectors struggled with low utilization rates, fierce market competition, and sharp profit declines, leading to liquidity pressures. Additionally, rising average prices of machine tools and increasing demand for high-end models were observed, based on import data and key enterprise production figures. Despite this, global economic recovery remained weak, and export growth continued to face downward pressure. Meanwhile, the long-term trend of rising imports has reversed sharply, further indicating a shrinking market size. While the National Bureau of Statistics projected a 13% to 14% growth rate for the entire industry in 2013, key enterprises forecasted more modest performance, with growth potentially flat or slightly lower than in 2012.
