In 1970, the Beijing Institute of Exploration Engineering of the China Geological Survey of the Ministry of Natural Resources began research directions on synthetic diamond drill bits, and established a group of five people from Shi Dazhen, Luo Weizhen, Ye Yuping, Liu Jinchang, and Wang Jinzhu to conduct research on synthetic diamond drill bits. The factory signed a cooperation agreement.

The equipment and materials of the Shanghai Grinding Wheel Factory are relatively good. The whole group worked overtime and finally developed the No. 63 formula, which became the best formula for the hot pressing method of the Beijing Institute of Prospecting Engineering.

Diamond bit

The successful formulation of Formula 63 has greatly accelerated the development of synthetic diamond impregnated bits. With the No. 63 formula, the sintering temperature is low and the pressure is small, which is very suitable for small particle synthetic diamond. The formula was later promoted to other manufacturers by the Beijing Institute of Prospecting Engineering and went to the textbook of the University of Geosciences.

In May 1974, the Ministry of Machinery, the Ministry of Metallurgy, the Ministry of Combustion and the Bureau of Geological Bureau of the State Planning Commission held a large-scale identification meeting for synthetic diamond impregnated bits in the tin mine of Hunan Province. At the meeting, the Shanghai Drilling Group of the Beijing Institute of Exploration Engineering and the Shanghai Grinding Wheel Factory cooperated with the hot pressing method to produce the first batch of artificial diamond impregnated drill bits in China.

At the time, Vice Premier Li Xiannian of the State Council gave full support to the development of synthetic diamond drill bits. On September 9, 1973, Deputy Prime Minister Li Xiannian issued a "recommendation to adopt a positive policy... to mobilize the masses, strengthen leadership, sum up experience, and make it quickly improve quality, multi-variety production..."

In 1978, the achievement won the National Science Conference Award together with the supporting projects.
