Researchers at Columbia University are currently working on a unique imaging approach that may in the future create a new era of capturing visual information. According to them, the flexible sheet camera under study uses flexible optics that can be bent. In theory, this camera system can be made into a roll-like plastic sheet to achieve an imaging method that conventional cameras cannot.
Researchers say that in order to make this kind of flexible camera come true, flexible image sensors are needed first—but they are still mainly focusing on the optical components. The team said that with a simple array of flexible detectors, it is possible to change the field of view, or field of view, by bending the array. However, the problem is that after bending, the image is bandlimited, and the resulting aliasing artifacts cannot be corrected by post-processing because the scene information is lost.
The team worked hard to solve this problem and focused on the curvature of the sheet by designing a deformable elastic lens array. Careful design of this flexible and flexible array allows the shape and focal length to be changed without aliasing. The team has designed such optical components and said that the lenses can be mated with flexible sensor arrays to form a complete thin-film camera.
A major feature of this design is that this lens array can actively achieve aliasing compensation without the need for driving or controlling each pixel. The project was supported by the United States Naval Research Office.
