A newest world record about photoelectric conversion efficiency has been born. The conversion efficiency of multi-junction solar photovoltaic cells reaches 46%. The technical achievements are achieved by French Soitec company, French microelectronics research institute CEA-Leti and Fraunhofer Solar System Institute co-developed.
Multi-junction cells are used in Concentrating Photovoltaic Power Systems (CPV) to provide low-cost electricity. It is reported that this is the second time the above-mentioned organization has set a new world record in one year. The previous world record was released in September 2013.
The multi-junction photovoltaic cell is selected from the Group III compound semiconductor materials. According to reports, the battery that broke the world record is a four-junction cell. Each sub-cell can precisely convert a quarter of the incident photons into a current of 300 to 1750 nm.
This latest record of conversion efficiency is measured at a solar concentration of 508, which has been certified by the AIST of the Japan Industrial Technology Research Institute.
Dr. Frank Dimroth, manager of the solar cell development project at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems in Germany, stated that this is a major milestone in the cooperation between France and Germany. We are very pleased that 46% of the conversion efficiency has been independently certified by the Japan AIST Institute. CPV is the most efficient solar power generation technology available today, and it applies to all countries that have high direct solar radiation values.
