Bearing failure in diesel engines is a common issue that can lead to severe damage and expensive repairs. One of the most critical problems is bearing burning, which occurs when the lubrication fails or the bearing is subjected to excessive heat and friction. To prevent this, it's essential to understand the causes and take proper preventive measures.
Early damage to sliding bearings is more frequent than actual burning, so preventing early wear is crucial for extending the life of the bearing. Proper maintenance and regular inspections are key to identifying potential issues before they escalate.
Here are some effective ways to avoid burning of diesel bearings:
1. **Accurate Measurement of Coaxiality and Roundness**
It’s important to measure the coaxiality and roundness of the main bearing bore accurately. This ensures that the crankshaft runs smoothly within the bearing housing. If the measurements exceed acceptable limits, the part should be replaced or machined accordingly.
2. **Improve Bearing Quality and Repair Process**
Ensure that the bearing material is of high quality and that the surface is free from defects. Proper lubrication is essential to prevent dry running and overheating.
3. **Proper Spring Opening Adjustment**
The spring opening of the bearing should be between 0.5–1.5 mm. This allows the bearing to maintain a tight fit with the housing, ensuring good contact and heat dissipation.
4. **Check Parallelism and Distortion of Connecting Rods**
Both new and used connecting rods should be checked for parallelism and distortion. Any defective parts must be discarded to prevent uneven load distribution on the bearings.
5. **Ensure Correct Installation Height**
The upper and lower bearing bushes should be installed 30–50 mm above the bearing seat plane. This helps ensure a tight fit once the bearing cap is tightened, reducing the risk of loosening and overheating.
6. **Scraping Method for Contact Surface**
The working surface of the bearing should be scraped to achieve 75–85% contact with the journal. This improves oil retention and reduces friction.
7. **Careful Handling During Assembly**
Follow strict assembly procedures, including proper torque application for bearing bolts. Improper installation can cause deformation, stress concentration, and premature bearing failure.
In addition, always pay attention to the condition of the crankshaft journals and the bearing surfaces. Any irregularities should be addressed immediately to avoid long-term damage.
By following these steps, you can significantly reduce the risk of bearing burning and extend the lifespan of your diesel engine components.
