The US Patent and Trademark Office passed a patent on Wednesday to strengthen sapphire without chemical treatment. The patent, titled "Modifying the Properties of Sapphire Glass by Ion Implantation," was applied by Apple.

In this patent, Apple suggests that although sapphire may be harder than glass, the traditional chemical strengthening methods used in glass screens are not suitable for sapphire glass. Therefore, Apple proposed a new strengthening method that injects ions into the lattice structure of sapphire to create a compressive stress layer with enhanced stability to resist stress. In the patent, Apple proposed several methods to strengthen sapphire, including bombardment of sapphire with argon, nitrogen, titanium and iron ions.
At the beginning, Corning, which produces Corning Glass, was blamed for the sapphire and was soon to be applied to mobile phone screen materials. Now, the patent passed by Apple may solve the problem that sapphire does not resist pressure.
In addition to reinforced sapphire glass, Apple's patented technology can also be colored on the edge of the screen, such as the black and white used in the current iphone bevel.
