Interpretation of key technologies for escaping UHV DC transmission

Breakthrough in Yunguang UHV
In the past two years, the disputes concerning the UHV AC/DC have come to an end. But a few years ago, people did not have much idea about UHV construction. At that time, even if the UHV was not known to use 800 kV, everything was unknown. Yunguang Engineering was the first UHV DC transmission line in the world and there was no ready-made experience for reference. Li Ruihai, director of the China Southern Power Grid Production Technical Support Center, said with deep understanding.
From Chuxiong Prefecture in Yunnan Province to Guangzhou City in Guangdong Province, through the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Yunguang-Guangdong UHVDC transmission lines are rushing through mountains and waters, passing through a plateau at an altitude of about 2000 meters. The insulation level of converter stations at high altitudes is a problem for UHV DC transmission. At the same time, it is an important issue related to the safety of Yunguang project.
Chuxiong Converter Station is located on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, which is 1850 meters above sea level, and is the second highest converter station in the world. In order to crack the effect of thin air on insulation at high altitudes, China Southern Power Grid has developed the world’s first ±800 kV UHV DC composite insulator. This breakthrough in key technologies stems from research and application projects of high-voltage ± 800 kV external high-voltage direct current insulation in cooperation with South China Research Institute and Tsinghua University.
At that time, foreign similar technologies were mainly based on low altitude tests. After five years, this research project relied on the UHV Engineering Technology (Kunming) National Engineering Laboratory at 2,100 meters above sea level to study the elevation correction of the external insulation of the UHVDC transmission project, and proposed a high altitude UHVDC transmission project. The external insulation of the project provides a systematic solution for the external insulation design of UHVDC transmission projects in high altitude areas.
