Common wallpaper construction problems and rescue methods

1. Moldy - If you notice mold spots, especially black ones, it's important to first check for wall seepage or if the adhesive wasn't fully dry during installation. Sudden temperature changes between indoors and outdoors, or high humidity levels—especially during rainy seasons—can cause moisture to get trapped behind the wallpaper, leading to mold growth and bubbling over time. To prevent this, after installing the wallpaper, keep the room closed for a few days to allow proper drying. After three days, gently wipe the seams with a damp cloth to remove any excess glue. Once done, open the windows and ventilate the room thoroughly. Also, avoid getting the wallpaper wet before the paste has dried, as this can lead to mold issues.

If the mold isn’t too severe, you can try cleaning it with soapy water or a mild detergent. For tougher spots, use a cloth soaked in alcohol. Rubbing the area two or three times usually helps. Another option is to use bleach, but be cautious—it can irritate your skin, so always wear gloves and rinse the area well afterward. Some people may be hesitant to use bleach due to fears of fading the wallpaper’s color. In that case, consider using a specialized mold remover available at stores where you bought the wallpaper.

2. Edge Issues - After installation, check if the edges are properly aligned and if the wall absorbed the adhesive evenly. Make sure the glue is strong enough to hold the wallpaper in place. If the edges start curling, it could be due to poor-quality wallpaper, uneven application, or improper wall preparation. Always ensure the wall surface is clean and free of dust before applying the adhesive. Different types of wallpaper require specific adhesives, so choose the right one for your material.

3. Bubbles - Bubbles often appear when the glue isn't applied evenly or when air isn't fully removed during pasting. To fix this, use a squeegee to spread the glue more uniformly. If bubbles form, carefully cut them with a knife, release the air, and reapply glue to flatten the area. You can also use a syringe to inject glue into the bubble and smooth it out with a roller. This ensures the wallpaper lies flat without any bumps or gaps.

4. Color Differences - Color variations can occur during installation if the wallpaper models or batches don’t match. Before starting, double-check the model and batch number. When applying the final layer, make sure the pattern aligns correctly and is consistent in direction. If you notice color differences after installation, it might be due to lighting conditions or moisture exposure. Always test a small area first to ensure the colors match under different lighting.

5. Misalignment - If the pattern doesn’t line up, check if the installation method is correct and whether the wallpaper was properly aligned before pasting. Sometimes, the paper might stretch or shift if not positioned correctly. To avoid this, use a sample from the last batch on your workbench to match the design accurately. Taking your time during the alignment process can save you from having to redo the entire job later.
