1. Moldy - one of the most common issues with wallpaper is the appearance of mold spots, especially black mold. This often happens due to moisture buildup in the wall, which can result from water seepage or incomplete drying of the adhesive during installation. Poor ventilation, temperature fluctuations between indoors and outdoors, or high humidity during the rainy season can also lead to mold growth on the wallpaper. Over time, trapped moisture and air behind the paper can cause the wallpaper to curl, blister, or develop mold.
To prevent this, after installing the wallpaper, it's important to keep the room closed for at least a few days to allow the adhesive to dry properly. After three days, you can gently wipe away any excess glue from the seams using a damp cloth. At that point, you can fully ventilate the room. Also, avoid getting the wallpaper wet before the paste has dried, as this increases the risk of mold formation.
If mold appears, you can try cleaning it with soapy water or a mild detergent. For more stubborn cases, use a cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol. Gently rub the area a couple of times to remove the mold. Another option is to use bleach, but be cautious—bleach can irritate the skin and may fade the color of the wallpaper if not used carefully. Always wear gloves and rinse thoroughly after use. If you're unsure about using bleach, you can look for specialized mold removal products available at your local store where you purchased the wallpaper.
2. Edge Issues - after installation, check if the edges are straight and evenly applied. Make sure the wall absorbs the adhesive properly and consider increasing the bonding strength if needed. The main causes of curled edges include poor-quality wallpaper, uneven application, or improper wall preparation. To avoid this, ensure the wall surface is clean and smooth before applying the adhesive. Choose an adhesive that’s suitable for the type of wallpaper you’re using, and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
3. Bubbles - bubbles in the wallpaper usually occur when the glue isn’t applied evenly or when air gets trapped during the pasting process. To fix this, you can inject some glue into the bubble using a syringe and then press it flat with a roller or a squeegee. If the bubble is small, you can make a tiny cut with a knife, release the air, and reapply the glue. It’s important to work carefully to avoid damaging the wallpaper.
4. Color Variation - if there’s a noticeable difference in color between sections of the wallpaper, first check if all the rolls are from the same batch and model. When laying the wallpaper, make sure the pattern is aligned correctly and that the direction is consistent. If color differences appear after installation, they might be due to lighting conditions or moisture exposure. In such cases, it may be necessary to replace the affected section or adjust the lighting in the room.
5. Misalignment - if the pattern doesn't match up, check whether the installation technique is correct, if the wallpaper was properly aligned before pasting, or if it was stretched or placed incorrectly. A good way to test the alignment is to lay out a sample on your workbench before starting the actual installation. This helps ensure that the pattern matches perfectly and avoids any mismatched areas.
