In recent hot weather, temperatures have risen above 30°C, making it essential for people to find ways to stay cool. Many choose to relax in air-conditioned rooms or head to the swimming pool. For those with bathtubs at home, they’ve started repurposing them as a summer cooling tool—turning them into mini pools for kids or even using them for a refreshing sea salt bath. However, cleaning an unused bathtub can be quite challenging, especially if it's a high-end model with multiple functions. With many access points and hidden areas, proper maintenance is key.
Today, we’re sharing some expert tips from the manager of Lejia Sanitary Ware on how to clean and maintain your bathtub effectively.
**Weekly Cleaning Based on Material**
For acrylic bathtubs, use a soft sponge or flannel for cleaning. Avoid coarse fabrics or scouring pads, as well as any cleaners with abrasive particles. It’s best to avoid direct sunlight and hot cigarette butts. A mild detergent like dish soap works well, and you can also use glass cleaner. Cast iron bathtubs should be rinsed thoroughly after each use and wiped dry with a soft cloth. If there are stubborn stains, a small amount of non-abrasive cleaner can be used. Clean the non-slip area with a soft nylon brush—never use steel wool or abrasive sponges.
If your bathtub has a jacuzzi system, flush it more than twice a month. Turn the nozzles fully closed to prevent air leaks. Fill the tub with warm water up to two inches above the highest nozzle, or leave the water in after use. Add two tablespoons of low-foam dish soap and a bit of bleach. Run the jacuzzi for 5–10 minutes, then turn it off, drain the water, and rinse the surface thoroughly.
**Gentle Treatments for Stains**
Surface stains can be removed using a soft toothbrush and bleaching powder to eliminate mold and dirt. For tough stains, try rubbing half a lemon over the area, or apply whitening toothpaste with a soft brush. Turpentine can also be effective in such cases. For limescale, regular toilet cleaners work wonders. If you prefer a natural approach, lemon and white vinegar are great alternatives.
Avoid using fading agents, especially in colored bathrooms. To deal with mold and bacteria, rinse with bleach or hydrogen peroxide and dry immediately.
**Fix Scratches Promptly**
Once installed, never move the bathtub yourself. If you must relocate it, always consult a professional. Avoid hitting the surface with hard objects to prevent scratches or dents. If you need to repair minor scratches on an acrylic tub, wipe the area with a clean cloth, mix a colorless grinding solution, apply it, and then add a layer of clear protective wax. Do not wax the area where you sit, as this may make it slippery.
**Disinfect the Pipes Regularly**
Clean the pipes once or twice a week to remove odors and stop bacterial growth. You can use a sewer cleaner and pour it into the drain. Wait five minutes before flushing. Be careful not to use this in metal pipes. If the tub is clogged, close the drain valve first, fill it with some water, place a rubber plunger over the drain, and while opening the valve, cover the overflow hole. Then, push and pull quickly to suction out the blockage. For severe clogs, repeat this process until the drain is clear.
