MIT researchers found that by fusing graphene's many monolayer thin films together, they can create a network structure that, although porous, retains the surprising strength properties of graphene. They use a 3D plastic model to test which structure is the strongest under pressure and then arrange the graphene in the same way. In the end, they obtained a material density of only 5% of steel, but the strength was indeed 10 times that of steel.
Researchers believe that this material may be used in the future in automobiles, airplanes, and other fields. The new graphene-based 3D material is considered to be one of the strongest and lightest materials currently known.
