A research team at Osaka University in Japan has developed a new photocatalytic technology that uses phosphoric acid (H3PO4) and metal-free powder catalysts to generate hydrogen (H2) through H2O2 aqueous solution (hydrogen peroxide) under sunlight.
The research team found that because the catalyst is metal-free, H2O2 will not decompose, and H2O2 and H3PO4 will also form stable complexes through hydrogen bonding, which can inhibit H2O2 reduction and promote H+ reduction. Therefore, adding H3PO4 and a metal-free powder catalyst into the H2O2 aqueous solution, exposure to sunlight (visible light) can generate H2. H3PO4 has been added as a stabilizer to commercially available H2O2 aqueous solutions for a long time. Through this technology, a new energy cycle is expected to be realized, that is, storage and transportation of H2O2 aqueous solutions containing H3PO4, and the use of inexpensive metal-free powder catalysts to produce H2 on site.
