Dalian Institute of nano-gold catalyst research has made new progress

Recently, Huang Yanqiang of the Institute of Aerospace Catalysis and New Materials of Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Wang Xinkui of Dalian University of Technology have made new advances in nano-gold catalysis: for the first time, multi-phase nano-gold catalysts have been applied to the selective hydrogen production of pure formic acid. Under the condition of 50oC and no additive, the TOF value of catalytic decomposition of pure formic acid can reach 2882h-1, which is the highest value of the reported multiphase catalyst. This study provides a new idea for the design of a highly heterogeneous heterogeneous hydrogen formic acid catalyst. The related results were published in the form of communication on Energy & Environmental Science (2015, 8, 3204-3207).

Hydrogen still has major technical obstacles in terms of safe transportation and controlled storage and release, which limits its practical application. Formic acid has a wide range of sources, high hydrogen content (53g/L), stable and non-toxic at room temperature, etc. It can be used as a good hydrogen storage medium.

Formic acid systems with high concentrations of formic acid or even anhydrous liquids are not conducive to the decarboxylation reaction due to strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding. Therefore, it is reported that the heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts decompose the hydrogen production from formic acid, all of which require alkali auxiliaries or are carried out in a low concentration of formic acid solution, and this will greatly reduce the hydrogen release amount of the formic acid system, which is unfavorable for practical applications.

This study shows that under the synergistic action of surface Schiff base and Au, the formic acid molecules adsorbed at the interface can be easily dissociated and the H+ promoted beta-H fragmentation, and H2 and CO2 can be selectively generated. No other auxiliaries are required and can be performed in high concentrations of formic acid. The unique mechanism of action of nanogold and surface Schiff bases and their application in other catalytic fields are ongoing.

The research work was funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the key deployment projects of the Institute.
