Toppan Printing Launches 12 Hours of Light-Resistant Films for Disaster Prevention and Mitigation

Storage film samples and application examples

Toppan Printing announced on April 5, 2016 that it has developed a light-storage film for disaster prevention and mitigation that does not require power and emits light at night. It can emit light for about 12 hours, which is about 2 times that of traditional outdoor lighting film. Samples will be available from mid-June 2016. The goal is to achieve sales of about 2 billion yen in 2020.

This light-storing film is coated with a high-gloss light-storing pigment on a weather-resistant film as a substrate by using an independent coating technique. Using a method conforming to JIS Z9097, a standard for the Tsunami Evacuation Induced Marking System, 60 minutes of light was stored, and after 12 hours, the residual brightness was 3 mcd/m2. This brightness exceeds 2mcd/m2 of readable text brightness.

This luminescent film glows blue. It has a water resistance that still emits light after standing in water for 500 hours and a weather resistance performance that uses a metal halide lamp to promote weather resistance for 7 years without change. This product is available not only in rolls up to 200mm in width but also for a wide range of applications such as printing and molding. (Reporter: Kudo Daisuke)
