Soitec, France Introduces 4 Junction Photovoltaic Cell with 43.6% Conversion Efficiency

Recently, Soitec SA, headquartered in Bernin, France, announced the launch of the industry's first four-junction solar photovoltaic cell. Fraunhofer ISE (Fraunhofer ISE), the headquarters of the co-developer's headquarters in Freiburg, Germany, confirmed that the highest conversion efficiency of this type of photovoltaic cell has reached 43.6%.

Soitec said that when the solar light concentration is 319, the efficiency of the photovoltaic cell can reach 43.6%, and pointed out that when the solar light concentration is between 250-500, this type of battery efficiency will exceed 43%. Soitec expects that the four-junction technology will exceed the efficiency of three-junction photovoltaic cells.

Soitec CEO André-Jacques Auberton-Hervé stated: "The efficiency improvement is an important step beyond the traditional photovoltaic economy. This remarkable result can bring tremendous value to our solar energy sector and can validate our strategy in the solar market. And business model."

“By working with two of the world’s top research institutions, Fraunhofer and the Leti, we have made significant progress in the short term. In the future, this concept will continue to develop and it is hoped that by 2015 solar cell conversion efficiency will be increased to 50%.”

Design contains two dual junction batteries

The new four-junction design uses two twin-junction subcells grown in a separate III-V composite composite that enables the bandgap composition to capture a wider range of solar spectra. Soitec uses its patented semiconductor bonding and layer-based transfer technology to develop the new battery, which has been used in the semiconductor industry for decades.

The new battery was jointly developed by Soitec, Fraunhofer ISE and the Helmholtz R&D center for materials and energy. CEA-Leti, headquartered in Grenoble, France, also participated in the development of the project. (Translator: Krystal)
