Scientists publish wheat genome

Xinhua News Agency, a research team on the 27th announced that they have unlocked 95% of the wheat gene sequence. The results of this study will help alleviate the food security crisis caused by population growth, climate change and pest outbreaks worldwide.

British researchers said they have solved 95% of the gene sequence of the "Chinese Spring Line 42" wheat variety. Genome sketches have been published to promote wheat production and enhance research on the ability of wheat crops to adapt to diseases, floods and pests.

Michael Bevin, a professor at the John Innes Center who participated in the study, told AFP that “China Spring” was not a commodity wheat variety but was selected as the standard laboratory strain for research.

Keith Edwards, a University of Bristol scholar, said that the large number of wheat genomes is about five times that of humans and that unraveling wheat gene sequences is a huge challenge for scientists.

Global wheat prices have recently risen sharply as a result of Russia’s forest fires and floods in Canada and Pakistan have triggered a food harvest crisis.

Doug Kell, head of the British Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, said: "The recent short-term rise in wheat prices shows that our food system is vulnerable to shocks and potential shortages."

Kyle believes: "The best way to support our food safety is through modern research strategies to understand how we can ensure the continuous growth of crop production, especially in the face of climate change."
