This technique sounds similar to the already available "face recognition unlocking" technology. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has a "Face Recognition Unlock" app; the Samsung Galaxy Nexus also has this feature that allows users to unlock the smartphone with their own photos.
Last year, Apple also applied for a patent related to face recognition. Apple's patent and Google's approved "Face Recognition Login Computer" patent have many similarities. It is unclear what effect Google's patent approval may have on Apple's application, but from the current state of patent litigation, the possibility of a fight between the two sides cannot be ruled out.
