Crane network technicians briefly explain the failure analysis of a gantry crane's brake malfunction. When the crane is rotating, a brake failure can lead to the limit torque limiter slipping, even before reaching its designed resistance torque. This often happens when the worm gear reduction box is being disassembled.
(1) Reason Analysis: In real-world operations, gantry cranes frequently start and stop, causing the friction disc of the torque limiter and the conical surface of the worm wheel sleeve to experience repeated motion and wear. Over time, the upper and lower friction discs gradually move together along the cone surface of the worm. The intersection point of the two conical surfaces has a smaller diameter than the small end of the friction disc, leading to the formation of an annular boss on the inner surface of the worm wheel. The compression spring generates pressing force that is shared between the conical surface and the annular boss. When the pressure from the annular boss becomes dominant, the frictional arm shortens, reducing the effective friction area and, consequently, the friction torque. This results in the torque being less than the original design value, causing the failure.
(2) Troubleshooting Method: To resolve this issue, the rotating worm gear reducer should be disassembled, and the worm wheel removed. Then, the annular boss on the inner conical surface of the worm wheel must be eliminated. This modification allows the intersection of the two conical surfaces to become a transitional cylindrical surface, with a diameter slightly larger than the small end of the friction disc. This adjustment helps restore the proper engagement and ensures the torque limiter functions as intended.
