Fibre Channel 32Gbps Standards To Be Released

On the eve of the December 9th to 12th Las Vegas Gartner Data Center meeting, the Fibre Channel Industry Association FCIA announced today that its INCITST 11 Standards Committee has recently completed the sixth generation of the 32Gbps Fibre Channel physical interface FC-PI-6 industry. The standard will be submitted to the American National Standards Institute ANSI in the first quarter of next year. The establishment of this standard is a new milestone in the FCIA bandwidth rate presentation.

Skip Jones, chairman of the FCIA, said the FCIA is helping the Fibre Channel protocol gain more applications. Many applications come from the end user's experience needs. The 32Gbps Fibre Channel standard is the fastest single-channel serial transmission rate in storage connectivity history.

The current maximum speed of Fibre Channel is 16Gbps. The 32Gbps standard doubles the speed. The relevant equipment is expected to be launched in 2015 and 2016.
