Liu Hanyuan: PV industry becomes the biggest engine of economic development

Interview with the Standing Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Executive Vice President of the New Energy Chamber of Commerce of the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Tongwei Group Liu Hanyuan

According to statistics recognized by various governments and experts, currently known reserves of petroleum around the world can be extracted for about 40 years, natural gas can be extracted for about 50 years, raw coal can be extracted for about 200 years, and China's recoverable reserves of raw coal is 115 years. In just 20 years, natural gas was only 49 years old. The energy accumulated over 5 billion years on the earth will be depleted by humanity in tens of years. The energy crisis is gradually spreading to every corner of the world, becoming a bottleneck for economic and social development.

Therefore, vigorously developing renewable energy sources such as biomass, water, and wind energy, especially solar photovoltaic power generation, has become a question that must be answered for sustainable human development and survival. The reporter interviewed the Standing Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, the executive vice president of the New Energy Chamber of Commerce of the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, and Liu Hanyuan, chairman of the Tongwei Group's Board of Directors, on issues related to the solar photovoltaic industry.

Resolve solar energy

China's solar energy resources are very rich

Reporter: What are the advantages of developing China's solar photovoltaic industry?

Liu Hanyuan: China has a vast territory and is rich in solar energy resources. With two-thirds of China’s land area, the annual total annual solar radiation per square meter reaches 3,350-8,400 MJ, with an average of 5,860 MJ (equivalent to 199 kg of standard coal), and the annual surface of our country. The absorbed solar energy is equivalent to about 2.4 trillion tons of standard coal energy, equivalent to 842 times of the total national energy consumption of 2.85 billion tons of standard coal in 2008.

Reporter: Where is the best solar energy resource in China?

Liu Hanyuan: West Tibet is the region with the most abundant solar energy resources in China. It has an annual maximum of 2333 kWh/m2 (a daily radiation of 6.4 kWh/m2), ranking second in the world, second only to the Sahara Desert in Africa. In China, there are more than 1 million square kilometers of desertified land, which is increasing year by year. It is mainly distributed in the northwest and southwest regions where solar energy resources are relatively abundant. It is assumed that 1% of these desertified lands are used to install grid-connected photovoltaic power generation systems. At present, the more conservative 100Wp/m2 technology level calculation, the installed capacity can reach 1 billion kilowatts, and in 2008 the country's total installed capacity of power generation is only 800 million kilowatts.

Solar energy will become the future energy star

Reporter: In recent years, the polysilicon in the upper reaches of the solar photovoltaic industry is a hot spot for domestic investment. What is the scale and technology of this industry?

Liu Hanyuan: With the large-scale application, rapid development and great prospects of solar photovoltaic power generation, the large-scale, industrialized production and application technologies of polysilicon in its upstream have become increasingly mature, especially from the perspective of domestic and global existing production processes. The entire polysilicon production achieves a closed operation within the industrial chain and system, which is close to the zero emission level.

Reporter: In the past 10 years, how is the global solar energy industry scale?

Liu Hanyuan: In the past 10 years, the average annual growth rate of the global solar photovoltaic industry is 41.3%, and the scale of the solar cell industry has increased by 35 times. China's solar cell output in 2008 has exceeded 2000MW, accounting for 36.7% of global production. However, the development of the domestic solar power market is extremely slow. As of the end of 2008, the cumulative installed capacity was less than 2% of the world's total, and the development of the industry and market was unbalanced. In view of the unique and huge advantages of photovoltaic industry in China's resources, long-term, safe, convenient and simple maintenance, and low operating costs, the country should further support relevant policies, vigorously support the optoelectronics industry in the early stage of development, and become a new economic growth. Points to participate in global economic competition.

Reporter: What is the trend of solar energy in the future?

Liu Hanyuan: According to the survey, the European Union will install 3GW (millions of kilowatts) of photovoltaic power generation equipment in 2010, increase it to about 200GW in 2030, and the world may reach 1,000GW. The two forms of the grid-connected photovoltaic system and the large-scale photovoltaic desert power station will gradually become the mainstream of China's photovoltaic market. At the same time, solar photovoltaic power generation can continue to play an important role in solving the problem of electricity use and poverty alleviation in the remote areas of China. We believe that with the gradual depletion of fossil energy and the rapid development of solar energy technology and industry scale, solar energy will eventually become the future energy star with its high conversion efficiency, simplicity, reliability, economy, and environmental protection.
