ABB offers solutions for the largest sewage treatment plant

Recently, as a key project for the clean water quality of the Victoria Harbour introduced by the Hong Kong government, the Harbour Area Treatment Plan (HATS) is a comprehensive project for the collection, treatment and discharge of sewage from Kowloon and Hong Kong Island. The Stonecutters Island Sewage Treatment Plant at Victoria Harbour is an important part of the project. Hong Kong's China Shipbuilding Wastewater Treatment Plant is one of the world's largest sewage treatment plants. ABB Group has recently announced that it will provide leading automation solutions for its construction.

After the completion of the project in 2014, the plant will be able to handle 2.45 million cubic meters of sewage daily, benefiting 5 million residents of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon Island.

The HATS project includes two phases of construction: The first phase of the project was completed in 2001. It mainly includes the construction of a sewage pipeline with a length of approximately 23.6 kilometers and the sewage from the northern areas of Kowloon and Hong Kong Island will be transported to nearby areas. Stonecutters Island sewage treatment plant for processing.

The second phase of Section A is currently under construction. It mainly involves the construction of a sewage pipeline with a length of about 21 kilometers to transport sewage from the northern and southwestern parts of Hong Kong Island to Stonecutters Island Sewage Treatment Plant. The project will also expand the Stonecutters Island Sewage Treatment Plant to centralize the treatment of all areas of the HATS project. The second phase of the second phase of the project is the third and final phase of the entire project and is currently under review. The project will mainly build new biomass processing facilities.

Upon completion in 2014, the HATS project will benefit the 5 million residents of Hong Kong Island and most of Kowloon. Stonecutters Island Sewage Treatment Plant will become one of the largest sewage treatment plants in the world. The daily sewage treatment volume will reach 2.45 million cubic meters, which is 50% more than the current treatment capacity (1.7 million cubic meters).

In the HATS project, ABB provided a complete set of factory automation solutions for the main pump station contractor of the Phase IIA project, Hong Kong Biwater Man Lee Ltd. Island sewage treatment plant.

The automation solution provided by ABB controls approximately 43,000 I/Os (input and output ports) throughout the plant and will be implemented in two steps: Upgrading to ABB Distributed Control System (DCS) adopted in HATS Phase 1 in 2001 to Symphony Plus A new Symphony Plus decentralized control system for the expansion of the WWTP and the new pump station.

Symphony Plus is the latest product of the ABB Symphony decentralized control system family and is one of the most widely used control systems in the global power generation and water industries.

One of the greatest features of this solution is to ensure that ABB can upgrade the HATS Phase 1 control system online during the normal operation of the plant without any unplanned downtime. Cabinets, workstations, and other hardware will be installed within the planned two-year downtime within the next two years. In addition, this solution also enables ABB to provide an integrated factory automation integrated management system for the entire wastewater treatment plant. By then, through the new and old versions of the Symphony Plus system, operators can manage the control of new and old system components in the factory.

ABB will complete the upgrade of the Symphony Plus system in the HATS Phase I project in the second half of 2013, and will install the Symphony Plus system for the Phase IIA project by the end of 2014.
