Rusal plans to build alumina plant in Indonesia

UC RUSAL said on Monday that it is considering building a bauxite and alumina processing plant in Indonesia.

The media quoted the representative of Indonesian mining company Antam as saying that the company plans to establish a joint venture with RUSAL in Southeast Asia to build a factory with a total cost of US$220 million and an annual production capacity of 300,000 tons.

Spokesman Olga Sanarova said, “We are interested in Indonesia because of its rich bauxite resources. We are currently conducting inspections on the construction of bauxite and alumina processing plants.”

Rusal’s joint venture company was formed in March of this year through the merger of Rusal Aluminum, Ural Aluminum and Glencore alumina industries. Its aluminum and alumina production capacities accounted for 12.5 and 16% of the world’s total aluminum and alumina production capacity, respectively.
