Hydrogen production principle based on photocatalyst electrolysis mixing system

The Japan Industrial Technology Research Institute announced on June 15, 2016 that it has developed the world's most efficient photocatalyst with the same level of solar conversion efficiency as corn. This is the result of the functional materials research group of the Zynergy Solar Power Research Center.
In terms of photocatalysts exhibiting high energy conversion efficiency, the previously discovered tungsten trioxide (WO3) has a narrow absorption wavelength range and cannot fully utilize visible light. For this reason, the research focus on "BiVO4", which can absorb light of longer wavelengths but has low efficiency, has begun its research around high performance.
As a result, it has been found that the addition of gallium (Ga) to BiVO4 and improvement of the blending conditions results in a significant increase in efficiency.
Researchers used a "photocatalyst electrolysis mixing system" consisting of a combination of a powder photocatalyst and an electrolysis apparatus added to a reaction cell to develop a low-cost hydrogen production process using ferric ionized electrolysis water (pictured). If the system is used on the premise that the efficiency of converting solar energy into chemical energy (convert ferric ions into divalent iron ions), the efficiency of Ga-BiVO4 photocatalyst reaches 0.65%, which is the efficiency of the original WO3 ( 0.38%) 1.7 times.
According to reports, the conversion efficiency of 0.65% is close to the efficiency of corn converting solar energy into cellulose and sugar (about 0.8%).
As for the hybrid-based hydrogen production system developed by ZTE, if the energy conversion efficiency of the photocatalyst is increased to 3%, the cost of hydrogen production will be comparable to that of the fossil fuel reforming method (30 Yen/Nm3 or less. ). In the future, the research institute will repeatedly improve the photocatalyst, and the goal is to achieve a conversion efficiency of 3%. (Reporter: Hiroshi Kenji, Nikkei BP Cleantech Institute)
