A research team in Japan recently announced that they used inverters developed by the semiconductor material gallium nitride (GaN), which have been successfully applied to electric vehicles for the first time, and are expected to make electric vehicles save more than 20% energy. The research team was led by Hao Amano, one of the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics and a professor at Nagoya University in Japan.
The inverter is one of the key components of an electric vehicle, and its function is to convert the DC power stored in the battery into the AC power required by the motor. It can also be understood as an electronic device that converts low-voltage (12, 24 or 48 volts) direct current into 220 volts alternating current.
This time, the Amano team used gallium nitride to develop a pure electric vehicle that is 20% more energy-efficient than a general pure electric vehicle, and named the vehicle "ALL GaN Vehicle". The speed of 50 kilometers per hour has been reached in the test, and it is planned to achieve a speed of 100 kilometers per hour this year.
Compared with traditional technology, the new inverter using gallium nitride is more efficient and can greatly reduce the power consumption in the conversion. It can also be applied to other environmentally friendly vehicles such as hybrid cars and is expected to help reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
The "ALL GaN Vehicle" car was exhibited at the 46th Tokyo Motor Show that opened on the 24th. Amano said that the use of gallium nitride as an electric vehicle battery is still the first in the world. However, they are still facing the research on the two issues of device reliability and price. They hope that the new technology will reach the use standard as soon as possible and strive to enter the market in 2025.
