In the global process of promoting sustainable energy development, lithium-ion batteries are regarded as a crucial key technology. While widely used in electric vehicles, commercial aerospace and other fields, the heavy metal materials such as cobalt and nickel used by it also bring serious negative effects. To this end, IBM announced the successful development of a new battery, which mainly relies on three materials extracted from seawater, and from the initial test, there is no compromise in performance.
Through cooperation with Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz research department, battery electrolyte supplier Central Glass, and battery manufacturer Sidus, IBM developed this new battery technology, thereby getting rid of dependence on heavy metals such as cobalt. IBM did not mention the method of manufacturing its new battery, only that it was made of "three new and different proprietary materials that have never been used in battery manufacturing in the past." In addition, the extraction of battery components from sea water can also reduce costs, making this new battery not only more beneficial to the environment and humans, but also potentially more affordable.
This technological breakthrough was discovered at the IBM Battery Lab. It uses a cathode material that does not contain cobalt and nickel, and a safe liquid electrolyte with a high flash point. This unique combination of cathode and electrolyte demonstrates the ability to suppress metallic lithium dendrites during charging, thereby reducing flammability, which may remove a major disadvantage of using metallic lithium as the anode material.
IBM said that the new battery design outperforms the commonly used lithium-ion batteries in terms of cost, charging time, power density, and efficiency. Specifically, in terms of charging, it takes less than 5 minutes to reach 80% of the electricity, and it is less flammable than lithium-ion batteries. On the truck, the battery life will be longer than the general lithium-ion battery.
Jeff Welser, vice president of IBM Research, said: "The goal is to have the (battery) first working prototype within a year or so." Welser added that IBM may not eventually use the design to manufacture products.
